Corona del Mar High School: Offering Opportunities for Success

Located in the Eastbluff neighborhood of Newport Beach, Corona del Mar High School is a combination middle school and high school serving students from grades seven through twelve. Ranked as one of the top 200 high school in the United States by Newsweek, the school serves more than 2,000 students.

History of Corona del Mar High School

Part of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District, Corona del Mar High School was founded in 1962. In the mid-1970s, the school went through an extensive design process that resulted in the development of its media center. In May 1990, the school completed the construction of the Marian Bergeson Aquatic Center. Named after state senator Marian Bergeson, the aquatic center cost $1.75 million to complete. 25 years later, the 29,000-square-foot performing arts center was completed. The center, which seats more than 360 people, cost $16 million to complete.

Awards and Recognition

Corona del Mar High School has been listed on several national and state-level lists of top schools. In 2011, it was ranked 127 out of 21,786 in math and science by U. S. News and World Report. That same year, Newsweek listed the school as 172 of the 500 best high schools in the country. The school also earned a gold medal from U.S. News and World Report in 2014, earning a national ranking of 222 and being listed as the 37th best school in California.

Athletics

Coronal del Mar High School competes in the Pacific Coast League of the CIF Southern Section and has been the state champion in several sports. This includes having won 81 CIF Southern Section Championships and 12 California Interscholastic Federation State Championships.

The Boys’ Water Polo team at Corona del Mar High School has won the southern section divisional title 13 times, including nine Division 1 titles. The Girls’ Cross Country team has also won six State Championships, while the 2010 Boys’ Soccer Team won the SoCal State Championship and ranked second in the nation. The Boys’ Volleyball Team won the Powerade Feb 50 ESPN Rise National championship trophy in 2011, while the Football team won the Division III State Football Championship in 2013. The high school also competes in sailing, crew and surfing.

Fundraising and Parent Involvement

Corona del Mar has very active parent and booster groups, which raise large sums of money every year for the school and its extracurricular programs. One evening fundraiser in 2007 raised $221,000 to go toward refurbishing the aquatic center. Three of the projects conducted each year by these parent organizations are responsible for raising more than $235,000 annually.
