How to Set Your Kids Up for Educational Success at Home

Back to school season is here — but this year is unlike any other in recent memory. The global pandemic has had a huge effect on how and where our children learn, and it’s too soon to say how that may continue during the new school year. Even if our kids return to their school campus, they will probably also be participating in some type of e-learning at home. For this reason, it’s a great time to design a learning space in your home that sets your kids up for educational success this school year. Here are some of the best tips we’ve found to create a space that will help your kids thrive.

Choose the best space

First things first – where is the best place in your home to create a great learning environment? If you have a spare bedroom, this could be ideal — especially for older children and teens who want some privacy while they’re working. You can also carve out a corner of your basement or family room that’s dedicated to schoolwork. Younger kids who need supervision can be set up at a kitchen or dining room table so that an adult can keep an eye on them throughout the day.

Remove distractions

Once you’ve chosen your space it’s time to remove all the distractions. Take out any items that aren’t related to school and relocate them to another space. You should also remove items that can be a distraction such as games and toys. If possible, you should also limit access to a family pet, as they can be disruptive while children are trying to learn.

Organize supplies

Next, you should organize your child’s supplies. Your young student is going to need a variety of supplies to supplement their classroom activities such as paper, pencils, folders, paper clips, etc. Organize the supplies in a way that is easy for your child to reach. That way, when they need supplies during the day or while working on homework, they can get them on their own without asking an adult for help.

Light it up

Good lighting is an essential component of an effective learning space. Try to choose a spot in your home that gets an abundance of natural light during the day. You can supplement natural light with desk lamps and other kinds of lighting. And be sure there is adequate light when it gets dark so that your kids can work on homework in the evening.

Have comfortable seating

Adults aren’t the only ones who need good seating when they’re working. If your child is going to be sitting for long periods of time, then you should get them an appropriate desk chair. The chair should have back support to prevent fatigue. You might also have a comfortable chair or even a large bean bag so that kids have a cozy place to read.

Personalize it

Finally, the key to creating a learning space your child will love is to personalize it. While you don’t want to go overboard, which can be distracting, it does help if there are items in the space that are special to your child. You can hang twinkle lights, maps, or even art projects that they’ve made.
