Cypress history

The modern history of Cypress began when Manuel Nieto purchased the land that is now the city. In 1804 Nieto died the wealthiest man in California, and in 1833 his sons distributed the land to their heirs. In the 1800s ranching was prominent in the area and included the largest cattle empire in Southern California, owned by Able Stearns. After a devastating flood followed by a severe drought, Stearns sold parcels of his land creating the first subdivision. As more people moved to the area, Cypress trees were planted as windbreaks. In 1956 the area was incorporated and named “Dairy City” which was later changed in 1957 to Cypress. Today, Cypress is a thriving residential community.
